Worked example

Common mistakes

  • Capitalizing every word

That is Capitalized Case. Title case keeps short words like "of", "and" and "the" lowercase in the middle of a title.

  • Lowercasing the first or last word

Every style capitalizes the first and last word, even "a" or "up": "Where Are You From", not "from".

  • Lowercasing long prepositions in AP

AP and APA capitalize any word of four letters or more, so "Between", "Through" and "With" are capitalized there.

  • Forgetting the word after a colon

The first word after a colon starts a subtitle and is capitalized: "The End: A Story", not "The End: a Story".

  • Changing brand names and acronyms

iPhone, eBay and NASA keep their own capitals. The converter leaves words with inner capitals and all-caps words alone.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste your titles

One title or many, one per line.

  2. 2

    Choose a style guide

Each style lowercases different minor words. The rule is shown under the buttons.

  3. 3

    Copy the result

First and last words, and the word after a colon, are always capitalized.

Questions

Which words stay lowercase in a title?
Usually articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor) and prepositions. Chicago and MLA lowercase prepositions of any length; AP and APA capitalize words of four letters or more, so "Between" and "With" are capitalized.
What about words like iPhone or NASA?
Words that already have capitals inside them, all-caps acronyms and URLs are left exactly as written.
Which style should I use?
AP for news and most blogs, Chicago for books and many publishers, APA for psychology and social sciences, MLA for humanities papers.
