Common mistakes

  • Shipping placeholder text

    Lorem ipsum left in a live page looks broken. Search the build for "lorem" before every release.

  • Testing only with lorem ipsum

    Real text has long words, numbers, links and other languages that break layouts in ways Latin filler never will. Test with real content too.

  • Using it where screen readers go

    Screen readers read the Latin aloud. Keep placeholder text out of alt text, labels and anything assistive tech announces.

  • Pasting HTML into a text field

    The HTML option wraps paragraphs in <p> tags; pasted into a plain text field, the tags show up as text. Use plain text there.

What is lorem ipsum?
Scrambled Latin, derived from Cicero’s "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), used since the 1500s as placeholder text so a layout can be judged without readable content distracting from it.
Why not use real text?
Readable text draws attention to what it says. Lorem ipsum has a natural-looking spread of word lengths without meaning, so people focus on the design.
Is it free to use?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is public domain and so is everything this generator writes.
