Worked example

Two users; clicking the email of the first and the first-name of the second copies these paths. Keys with a dash need bracket notation.

json
{"users":[{"email":"ada@example.com"},{"first-name":"Grace"}]}
copied paths
$.users[0].email
$.users[1]["first-name"]

Common mistakes

  • Dot notation for odd keys

Keys with spaces, dashes or starting with a digit need brackets: $.user["first-name"], not $.user.first-name.

  • Counting from one

Arrays are zero-indexed: the first item is [0], the third is [2].

  • Mixing path styles

Paths here are JavaScript style ($.a[0].b). jq writes the same path as .a[0].b: drop the $.

  • Searching with one letter

Search starts at two characters, so a single letter doesn’t filter the tree.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste or open your JSON

API responses, logs, configs: anything valid. Large files stay fast because only open branches are drawn.

  2. 2

    Expand and search

Open branches one by one, or expand everything. Search highlights matching keys and values and opens the way to them.

  3. 3

    Copy paths and values

Click a row to copy its path, like $.users[0].email, ready for code or jq-style tools.

Questions

How big a file can it open?
Large ones. Only expanded branches are rendered, so a file with hundreds of thousands of values still opens instantly.
What does the path look like?
JavaScript style: $.users[0].address.city, with ["odd key"] for keys that contain spaces or symbols.
Is my JSON sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens in this tab.
